Human Trafficking is a growing global problem and Canada is not exempt. In fact, it happens right here in Oshawa, Durham region, every day!
Human Trafficking occurs when a person is recruited, sold or traded by force, threat or coercion for the purpose of exploitation. It is said that Human Trafficking is a modern day form of slavery!
Women and young girls, when the police are fortunate to rescue them, often have nothing - not even clothes on their back. They are often wrapped in a sheet with nowhere to go! This is where Packed with Love comes in.
Packed with Love fills a backpack with - new clothing, toiletries, notebook, motivational book, wallet (with a gift card), a cozy blanket and other personal items meant to meet the immediate practical needs of a rescued victim. Each backpack costs approximately $200.00 to fill.
Once a backpack is completed it is given to Victim Services who work alongside a full time Durham Regional Human Trafficking team. This first response backpack is often the first “gift” a victim can call their own. It is meant to bring dignity, hope and a clear message - They are Cared For!
As of 2020 we have completed & delivered 119 backpacks. The ministry has been blessed financially through individual and group donations.
The Executive Director of Victim Services of Durham Region has expressed a heartfelt “Thank you for your ongoing & generous support. The backpacks are such a valuable resource for survivors of Domestic Human Trafficking. We are so grateful to the women who put them together”.
